A former security guard has been apprehended for allegedly robbing a woman on a motorcycle to finance gambling and Songkran festivities.

Yesterday, April 6, Police Major General Komsit Rangsai of Metropolitan Police Bureau 9, alongside Deputy Police Colonel Teerachai Detkad and Police Colonel Wichayanon Ektasaeng of Tha Kham Police Station, received a report from Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanakorn Chanrod and Police Lieutenant Colonel Krairerk Sithichot of the investigation team that led to the arrest of the former security guard, Thanarat Limpradit.

He was detained outside his residence in Ban Khlong San, Phra Samut Chedi district, Samut Prakan province. The suspect was found with a Yamaha NMax motorcycle, lacking a license plate, which was allegedly used during the crime.

The incident occurred on April 5, around 9am, when the victim, 27 year old Sirada, was riding her motorcycle along Bang Khun Thian-Chai Thale Road. As she neared Hong Tower, a male suspect on a grey-black motorcycle, lacking identifiable registration, stole her black shoulder bag containing 2,000 baht (US$60) in cash and a 1-gramme gold ring valued at 3,500 baht (US$100).

Pol. Lt. Col. Krairerk revealed that the suspect, previously employed as a security guard, admitted to needing money for online gambling and Songkran celebrations. An investigation into his background uncovered prior arrests, including drug-related charges in 2015, theft in 2019, and extortion in 2020. After interrogation, he was handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings.

Police Major General Komsit Rangsai addressed the public, noting the proximity of the Songkran festival, which might lead to similar crimes. Metropolitan Police Bureau 9 is actively addressing these concerns by instructing patrol officers and investigative teams at all stations to intensify crime suppression efforts, ensuring public safety and reassurance, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, four suspects carried out a robbery at a grocery shop located within a workers’ camp in Phuket, restraining the shopkeeper and making off with nearly 1 million baht in cash and gold. The crime was reported to Police Lieutenant Anusat Klinkiew of Thalang Police Station at around 12.30pm on March 25.
